Aftershock

Some years ago, I was visiting a friend who was spending the semester in Belfast.

"I was right here in this kitchen," she said, "and I felt what at first I thought was an
earthquake, until I realized it was just one of the hotels downtown blowing up."

I listened to her, and walked through the streets, staring up at the armored police vehicles
and the soldiers watching me everywhere I went, and thought -- how can people live like
this, never knowing from one day to the next whether this building or that will be left
standing, whether the people they love will be placed in danger -- through no fault of their
own -- over some stupid, senseless dispute.

Now I know.
